Hi,
I'm Andrew. This summer I'm working as a counselor
at International Sport Training Camp.
Choosing to work at camp has been one of the best
decisions I've made. Arriving At Camp After months
of preparation and lots of money saving it was time
for me to begin my overseas working holiday and I
was ready for the adventure. I had the flights booked
and paid for, I had all my shots I needed, and I had
packed everything I could think of into my backpack.
I was a bit apprehensive about what to expect or what
the camp was going to be like but from all the information
that I had received from the camp directors at International
Sports Training Camp in Pennsylvania it looked like
an amazing place and it was going to be a great summer.
I made my way from New York to the town of Stroudsburg
and was met by camp staff for my final journey to
the place I would call home for the next 10 weeks.
As I entered the camp, I was amazed by the place,
it is situated on a 100 acre lake with lakeside cabins
for the campers and staff. There are soccer fields,
and baseball diamonds, beach volleyball courts, trapeze,
and climbing tower and zip line, mountain bike trails,
dune buggy courses all situated on 300 acres in the
mountains. International Sports Camp is exactly that,
there are staff from all over the world, we have counselors
from Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, Russia,
Slovenia, South Africa, Poland and of course Americans
as well. It is a melting pot of cultures and personalities
and it is exciting to get the summer under way.
The first week of the summer was orientation. It involved
no campers at all, but it has prepared me for everything
ahead. The week involved lots of games to get to know
everyone that I will be working with, and many scenarios
for dealing with campers. I think I am ready to go
and can't wait for the campers to arrive!

Erin

Trip Counselor
Camp
Northwoods, Wiconsin Hi

|
I'm
Erin. This summer I'm working as a trip counselor
at Camp Northwoods in Wisconsin.
Wow...summer camp Ok, so a lot has happened since
I last posted. My first couple of groups of girls
were amazing, i have just finished up working with
a group of 15 10 year olds, who were at camp for an
introductory program, mostly aimed at girls who have
never been to resident camp before.
That age group is really tiring but sooo much fun.
They are great to be around and really put things
back into perspective without even realising it. Our
trip into the apostle islands was unreal, even with
the persistent black bear we had poking around the
camp site. About a week and a half ago, I injured
my knee and have been in to hospital a couple of times
for check ups and MRIs. Not really in line with my
summer plans, but hey, as camp teaches you, flexibility
is the key. I am starting to heal now, but we are
in the kind of scary process of working out whether
or not i will be able to participate in our big end
of season canoe trip.
My fingers are crossed but either way, im sure it
will work out. We have also been spending alot of
time working on leadership and morale with our staff,
I have found it alot of fun and quite eye opening.
Scarily, we are starting to think about the end of
summer, we only have just over 3 working weeks left,
but at the same time are in peak camper numbers right
now. Its kind of hard to get my head around, but staff
are already realising that summer camp doesnt last
forever. At least the memories do.

One
session down, three to go!
The
past three weeks have flown and at the same time it
feels like I've been here forever. Kids came, kids
went, and our camp now holds about 650 kids in total!
Staff is now totalling around 300 or so, I've met
half or so and can remember the names of about 50
I bet. There's SO many people here, and there was
quite the social life until we partied a little hard
and got grounded... oops... fingers crossed it's lifted
soon but let's move along... My bunk is now full of
11 year old girls.
I was away on an airport run at the time, and that's
a story in itself. No-one can truly appreciate the
logistics of collecting about 300 children from various
parts of the tri-state area. It's phenomenal. It involved
about 15 staff leaving camp at 6am, heading in vans
to Newark Airport, some place in Queens and even Massachussetts,
and getting out with the old kids and in with the
new. I was at Newark, said goodbye to kids on a noon
flight to Atlanta, said hello to kids on a 12.30pm
flight from Fort Lauderdale and proceeded to move
bags from the terminal to the van for the next half
hour... one duffle at a time! The rest of my day was
spent waiting with 14 year old Misty while her 3.15pm
flight to Dallas was delayed, delayed and delayed
until it FINALLY took off at 10.17pm.
Nothing tries a camp counsellor like entertaining
a child for SEVEN hours... trying to regroup with
other staff, then having a three hour drive back to
camp after. Stopped at a really nice diner though
;-)
